The nut is still roasted in the shell and then opened. After that, the skin of the nut is manually removed. Only after this step is the nut suitable for human consumption. Until we can buy a bag of cashew nuts in the store, a single cashew nut goes through a lot of steps, making it a relatively expensive type of nut.
